The Tar Sands operators are the largest single water licence holders in the province withdrawing millions of barrels of fresh water each year for the production of oil. The fresh water taken from the Athabasca water system ends up in large toxic tailings ponds that now litter the country side, contaminating water ways and species in the region.

Frontier would draw 24,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water each year or 2.76 billion m3 over the lifetime of the project, jeopardizing already threatened wetlands in the region and beyond. With adverse risks of tailings leaks, spills, and accidents on the park, the delta, and downstream communities, it is clear that the local environmental impacts are not justified.

The Lower Athabasca River system, which includes the Peace-Athabasca Delta, is a critical  water system for many Indigenous communities in the region. The bountiful ecology of the Delta has sustained families, cultures, and livelihood for generations.
